Viral studies on generalized Friend disease and a tumor variant in BALB/c and related hybrid mice.

In another report on the pathologic aspects of Friend virus leukemia (@) we have confirmed and extended our earlier observation (3) that this virus infection in BALB/c mice is identical to that de scribed in other susceptible strains of mice (4, 6). The development of a transplantable tumor van ant with the description of its biological and his tological characteristics in BALB/c and related hybrids has also been described (@). It is the purpose of the present report to (a) confirm the immunologic identity of the BALB/c virus with other strains of Friend virus, (b) de scribe the results of comparative virus studies in BALB/c and random-bred Swiss mice, as well as in BALB/c and related hybrids, and (c) report results of virus studies on tumor-bearing animals at varying intervals after tumor implantation.
